University College Cork became the 2019 Rustlers Collingwood Cup champions after a late comeback saw them defeat the University of Limerick 2-1 after extra-time in Markets Field on Wednesday.
There was a crowd of around 500 in the ground but a wider audience of over 10,000 who viewed part of the game at least on Rustler’s live stream of the game on Facebook.
The very excitable commentary was fun to listen to and it was a fine way to mark UCC’s third win in five year’s and this 99th playing of the prestigious tournament.
There was some frustration within University football circles at the fact that Stephen Kenny’s Republic of Ireland U21 was on a camp and having their first fixture at the same time, taking a number of players away from the squad and it has to be hoped that there will not be a similar clash next year when the centenary competition will be played.
Wednesday’s final provided plenty of drama with Player of the Tournament Robert Slevin heading home the winning goal in the second minute of extra-time to dash the hopes of a Limerick side who were minutes away from lifting their first ever Collingwood in their home county.
