Athletics Added to Phase One of Reopening

Athletics has become the latest sport to celebrate being included in the first phase of the reopening of society, from next Monday, May 18th.

Athletics is now one of four sports, alongside Golf, Tennis and Equestrian sport to receive Sport Ireland and Government endorsement to return to activity.

“It is a privilege for us to be one of the first sports returning to club activity and with this privilege comes a great responsibility to ensure all our clubs and members operate to the highest standards of compliance to prevent the further spread of Covid-19,” said Athletics Ireland CEO Hamish Adams.

“This is the first small step on our journey to return to full activity, we continue to plan and prepare for competition and events from August onwards subject to government directives.”

Individual and group training of up to four athletes who remain physically distant throughout will be permitted from Monday.

The Governing Body has prepared a full set of guidelines while recognising that each club will face its own individual challenges around social distancing, contact tracing, hygiene and member management.

Each club committee is being strongly encouraged to meet virtually to develop their own return to athletics plans. Athletics Ireland has produced a draft risk assessment template which is available to all clubs.

A strict set of guidelines has been developed with expert advice and is also available to all clubs.

The 5KM Travel radius remains in place for the time being in this phase.
