That was backed up yesterday afternoon when news emerged that Athlone Town will be entering a team in the 2020 edition of the So Hotels Women’s National League.
The club has competed in the Women’s Under-17 National League since 2018 and this move is part of their ongoing development – on and off the pitch.
Kayleigh Shine earned a place in the Republic of Ireland Women’s Under-19 squad for the UEFA European Championship qualifiers this year.
The team is being sponsored by Sport for Business member Top Oil and we wish them luck in the years ahead.
This brings to nine the number of teams that will be competing.
It was also announced by the FAI that Bray Wanderers will enter a team into the U-17 League for next season – bringing the total number of teams competing at that level to 13.
The development of teams and tournaments at the developmental level is critical for the ongoing success of the Women’s game here and we will have new in the coming weeks and months of further developments in this area.
