Ireland got the FIBA Women’s European Championship for Small Countries underway last night in front of a packed UCC Mardyke Arena.
The enthusiasm of the crowd was not enough to lift the team to victory over Norway but they will have another chance tonight when the home team takes on Luxembourg.
Ireland led at halftime by 58-51 but Norway finished the stronger eventually running out winners by 9 points, 73-62.
Tonight’s game is crucial with Luxembourg already having beaten Cyprus in the opener. Defeat would mean that Ireland’s chances of qualifying for the semi-final would be out of their own hands before the final group stage game with Cyprus on Thursday.
The Men’s Team are also in action today in the opening match of their group stage in San Marino.
They face Malta with a start time of 2 PM.
