The Special Olympics World Games Opening Ceremony took place in Abu Dhabi last night with Ireland front and centre stage.
Out 91 athletes entered the arena at the Zayed City Sports Complex to a strong cheer and official Philomena O’Hare was selected to read the Athlete’s oath, and important part of the ceremony.
Ireland’s own Mary Davis is CEO of the Special Olympics at a global level and she also played a key role in the ceremony alongside President of the movement Tim Shriver, whose mother Eunice, part of the Kennedy dynasty established the Special Olympics back in 1968.
7,500 athletes began taking part in Abu Dhabi this morning and their performance can be tracked online and via social media between now and next Thursday.
It is one of the most inspiring tournaments in sport and we will do our best to celebrate the achievements of our athletes when we return with the Sport for Business Digest on Tuesday.
