Champions’ League Broadcast Firsts

BT Sport will once again make this season’s UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League finals available for free on YouTube, the BT website, BT Sport channels and the app.

The BT Sport Channels are carried in Ireland by eir Sport, free to eir Broadband customers or via subscription on the Sky network.  An ongoing row with Virgin Media means that the channels are not available to Virgin media subscribers.

The repeat of the free to air experience via You Tube means that the games, including Man United’s final next week will be accessible anywhere though it is of less relevance in Ireland where both games will be broadcast on ‘free to air’ TV via RTE Sport and TV3 respectively.

The Champions’ League Final between Juventus and Real Madrid will go head to head with Sky TV’s first GAA Broadcast of the season and Dublin’s opening game in defence of the All Ireland Football Championship.

The move to You Tube last year was prompted in part by sponsor concerns over lower than ideal viewing figures for Champions League matches in the UK where BT Sport has exclusive broadcast rights.

There will be significant broadcast technology firsts this year with the game available for the first time in 4K UHD on YouTube and 4K UHD with Dolby Atmos sound on BT TV.

It will also be available as a first through a number of 360 degree streams on YouTube and the new BT Sport Virtual Reality App, allowing viewers to choose between a 360 degree produced programme with commentary and graphics, or select their own camera viewpoint.  That alone promises to be interesting in terms of the future adoption of VR in Sport.

“Our users love football, so we’re seriously excited to bring BT Sport’s ground-breaking coverage of these two massive games LIVE on YouTube, for a second year running,” saidYou Tube Senior Director Stephen Nuttall.

“Fans today expect quality content on every screen and this partnership delivers just that. People can enjoy it wherever they are, on any screen and experience new ways of watching the beautiful game. Super high resolution, 360 degree VR – we can’t wait.”

RTÉ Sport and eir Sport are both members of the Sport for Business Community.  Find out more about being part of building stronger links between sport and business here.
