The 2017 Young Footballer of the Year Con O’Callaghan won his plaudits playing in the blue of Jim Gavin’s Dublin football team but while they have been putting together a flawless start to the Allianz League he has been dancing in a variety of different spotlights.
Last weekend he was the man of the Match for Cuala in the AIB All Ireland Club Hurling Championship in Thurles. This weekend he goes back to the bigger ball with UCD who contest the final of the Electric Ireland sponsored Sigerson Cup Final at the Santry Sports Grounds belonging to Trinity College Dublin.
Both sides have made it after hard-fought Semi Final wins in midweek over Ulster University and Dublin Institute of technology respectively and Saturday’s Final will be streamed live on TG4’s YouTube Channel with a 3.30 throw in time.
UCD have won a record 33 Sigerson titles while NUIG are playing in their first decider since 2003. That may be an indicator of the likely outcome though Galway have made a habit recently of tearing up history books.
There will be an interesting battle on the shirt fronts as well as the two sides are sponsored respectively by AIB and Bank of Ireland.
In fact, there has been a significant mirroring of the two brands throughout as the two losing semi-finalists were also sponsored by the same two brands.
The race to capture the hearts, minds and accounts of young people making their first steps into the adult world is clearly manifesting itself in sponsorship support for Ireland’s third level sporting institutions.
The GAA’s content arm has been producing highlights reels for sharing through social media throughout the tournament and the #FirstClassRivals hashtag celebrating Electric Ireland’s first-year involvement as sponsors has been popular across social media
