Cricket Ireland suffered a cruel blow from the weather today with the marquee Royal London One-Day International at Malahide abandoned part way through.
Sky’s cameras were broadcasting to the world and English sports fans were tuned in for relief from the election but all was in vain as the umpires bowed to the inevitable and called the match off.
Planning is everything though and the Cricket Ireland team have been quick to offer a metaphorical umbrella by giving fans who were among the near 10,0000 crowd the option of complimentary tickets for a choice of events later in the summer.
Supporters can attend either the ICC World Twenty20 Cup Qualifiers weekend at Malahide at the end of July, or the three match T20 series against Scotland at Bready in mid-June.
This is small consolation but tomorrow is another day and the authorities should not stay down for too long over reaching for the stars and getting rained on by the heavens.
The image above from our friends at Inpho.ie sums up the day and was shared around the world earlier via the Guardian live blog on the days events.
