Sport is never just about the winning. It is at it’s strongest when it comes to ‘being brave in the attempt’ as expressed in the athletes pledge of the Special Olympics.
When the National Games came to Dublin last month it was an occasion to celebrate the achievement of a special group of athletes as well as those who support them.
“You are citizens who have refused to be defined or limited by any narrow stereotypes that might still linger in any corner of our society today,” said President Michael D Higgins at the official Opening Ceremony.
“Instead you have embraced the expectation that you can succeed, can aspire to live the life of your dreams; have your voice hear, your talents respected and you can be defined by your skills and abilities, by all your possibilities. And it is that determination and courage, harnessed in huge dedication, that has brought you here today.”
