Drogheda United is mourning the passing on Wednesday night of the man credited with building the club that exists today.
In a short statement issued by the club yesterday they said that “It is with great sadness this morning that we announce the passing of our Club President and former Chairman Vincent Hoey, May he Rest In Peace.”
“Vincent served Drogheda United throughout his life and has always been the heart and soul of the club. Without Vincent’s effort, dedication and vision there would be no Drogheda United today.”
“We will miss him hugely but we will never forget him.”
The club will play Finn Harps tonight in the second leg of the Promotion play off that could see them return to the SSE Airtricity Premier League.
They lead 1-0 from the first leg at Drogheda United last week and it will be an emotion charged game tonight.
Vincent’s son Conor is the current club chairman. The funeral will take place in Drogheda on Monday morning.
