The New Zealand All Blacks may be World Number One and an awesome test for Ireland on Saturday but we discovered in West Dublin on Monday night that they are beatable.
Brought together for a unique skills challenge across multiple sports by their respective team sponsor AIG, the All Blacks were represented by captain Kieran Read, Ryan Crotty, Damian McKenzie, Owen Franks, and Codie Taylor. Facing off against the visitors were Dublin GAA’s Stephen Cluxton, Dean Rock, Cormac Costello, Conal Keany and Eoghan O’Donnell.
In front of a large crowd of spectators around the 9th hole lake in Castleknock Golf Club, the target challenge consisting of rugby, Gaelic football, hurling and golf.
As you’d expect from high-performance sports stars each group was able to quickly come to grips with the different rules and ball shapes though it must be said that the hurling presented a bit more of a challenge to our visitors.
In the end, Dublin emerged as winners on a score of 160 points to 100.
If it’s a similar scoreline on Saturday evening at the Aviva there will have been some level of entertainment. I’m sure though that we would settle for a one-point win.
