Emma Duffy from The42.ie has won the Investec 20×20 Media Award for the month of April.
Duffy’s winning article is an in-depth feature on the rise of Isibeal Atkinson, a 17-year-old winger with Shelbourne FC and the senior national football team.
The interview arose out of a media day at the Aviva Stadium where Atkinson was one of the players helping to promote the Aviva Soccer Sisters programme of camps taking place over Easter.
“Isibeal is clearly a footballing talent with a bright future ahead of her,” said Anna Kessel, Investec 20×20 Media Awards judging panel Chair.
“She is a footballer making the grade and having been handed her first senior international cap at the age of just 16 should be a headline generator across the media spectrum. It’s really encouraging to see Isibeal’s achievements secure such positive media coverage with in-depth reporting from Emma Duffy at the 42.ie.”
“Emma Duffy’s interview brings to life a genuine and heart-warming story of a young talented footballer and a special relationship with her dad, bound together by their love of football,” added Michael Cullen, CEO of Investec.
“Isibeal’s dedication to her sport and her father’s willingness and encouragement to help her realise that dream is an important theme that 20×20 hopes to demonstrate.”
“More needs to be done to ensure that there is better access and a stronger pathway for our young girls to be able to play football in a structured environment,” said Mary O’Connor of the Federation of Irish Sport, backers of the 20X20 initiative.
“The hope would be that in a few years’ time, girls will have access to team sports in a commutable distance.”
The Investec 20×20 Media Awards recognise and reward excellence in Irish journalism focused on Women in Sport.
