eir Sport has pounced late and secured rights to broadcast live coverage of the final golf major of the year, the US PGA Championship at Quail Hollow.
All four days of the event, which starts this Thursday, August 10th and runs to Sunday, August 13th, will be live on eir Sport as Jordon Spieth gets his first opportunity to complete a career Grand Slam following his recent success at the Open Championship.
Sky Sports lost the rights to the tournament last month and it had looked as though only limited coverage on the BBC would be the extent of the coverage for Irish golf fans.
This news then is a major boost for them and for those who like to be part of the biggest sporting events.
It is the second golf major of the year to be broadcast on eir Sport in 2017 following The Masters back in April. It also backs up the channel’s ability to secure late rights having done similar with Ireland’s victory over the All Blacks in Chicago last year. Not bad for a channel only just over one year in existence since eir took over Setanta Sport in 2016.
Irish hopes will likely rest on Rory McIlroy, a 2-time US PGA Championship winner and a 2-time winner at Quail Hollow.
“This is massive news for Irish golf fans,” said Glen Killane, Managing Director of eir TV and eir Sport.
“They won’t have to miss any of the action as eir Sport will provide comprehensive coverage of the year’s final major.”
“It’s another statement of our on-going intent to give Irish sports fans the best coverage and the best choice.
“Fans will be able to see the US PGA on the eir Sport channels and on the eir sport app, which can be cast onto your television screen via Chromecast. So, it’s more golf action and more ways to watch.”
eir Sport is also broadcasting every game live throughoyt the Women’s Rugby World Cup taking place in Dublin and Belfast this month.
