Ireland has secured another major European sports event with the news this afternoon from Budapest that Athletics Ireland has secured the hosting of the European Cross Country Championships for the second time.
The Championships will take place at the Sport Ireland National Sports Campus on Sunday 13th December 2020. Ireland hosted the same Championships at Santry Demesne in 2009.
Athletics Ireland bid for this championship was supported by Fingal County Council, Sport Ireland and RTE.
The 2018 event will take place at Tilburg in the Netherlands on the site of a safari park. 157 competitors from 32 countries took part in last year’s event in Slovakia.
The Championships are sponsored by Spar and Ireland has a fine record with Catherina McKiernan in 1994 and Fionnuala McCormack (née Britton) in 2011 and 2012 capturing the Women’s European title.
