PWC Staff Relay Series
May 22 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
A second night is to be added to this year’s Staff Relay Series with PwC Ireland. The event is now in its fourth year and in 2018 sold out again with 300 companies and 1,000 teams taking part.
It has become Ireland’s biggest mass participation relay and is a key element for runners and wannabe runners working across the city and the Greater Dublin Area.
This year’s event will take place in the Phoenix Park on Wednesday and Thursday, 22nd and 23rd May with the action getting underway at 6 pm.
Given the emphasis on wellbeing and morale within offices and working environments, this was always likely to be a winner of an event, providing many with the opportunity to mix friendly competition against rival firms, with a chance to celebrate what will hopefully be the start of summer.
The event is organised by Sport for Business member Global Relay Events, led by Pierce O’Callaghan and Eamon McLoughlin.
“The vision of the Staff Relay Series is clear – to provide a unique and special opportunity to build team spirit and create a sense of healthy competition within the workplace and to bring a sense of fun to a running event characterised with our hashtag #Run4aLaugh,” said O’Callaghan who has a strong background in athletics and major events.
“Last year the event reached its maximum capacity for one night and we have had to open a second night this year to satisfy demand. Spaces are filling up quickly so we would advise entering early to avoid disappointment.”
The expectation is to have as many as 7,000 participants take part over the two nights this year.
The organisers have taken inspiration from events across Europe including in Copenhagen where a similar workplace targeted event has grown to run over an entire week.
Sport for Business Partner PwC is again the largest single supporter of the event. Managing Partner Feargal O’Rourke takes part in the race himself and he was joined at yesterday’s launch by Chair of the Women’s Gaelic Players Association Maria Kinsella and Dublin Football All Ireland winner Eoin Murchan, both of whom are working in PwC.
“Last year PwC had a record 105 teams participating and it was a great event of rivalry, teamwork, fun and excitement,” said PwC People Partner Susan Kilty.
“The event is a great way for work colleagues to mingle in a relaxed atmosphere.”
“Supporting the 2019 Staff Relay Series compliments our Wellness programme, ‘Boost’, which encourages our people to stay well in body and mind and take a holistic approach to their health.”
The final kilometre of the relay route passes through the Relay Village – a tented area where companies set up office for the night – and colleagues can cheer and encourage their teammates as they complete the final leg of the relay before socialising over refreshments.
In days gone by Dublin offered little by way of post work socialising than a trip to the pub. For a new generation of young worker, that is simply not enough any more.
RTÉ, Bristol Myers Squibb and HSBC Bank filled the first three places last year. In 2017 it was Pop Up Races leading home RTÉ with Roughan and O’Donovan Consulting Engineers in third.
