Dundalk completed the Double in Irish football with yesterday’s win at the Aviva Stadium in the Irish Daily Mail sponsored FAI Cup.
The narrative beforehand that the dominance of Dundalk and Cork City was damaging the game was blown away by the atmosphere in the ground with an attendance of 30,412 making for a fantastic atmosphere.
It was the biggest attendance at the Final since 2010, and 50 percent ahead of the average crowd since that game when Sligo Rovers came to town.
Wexford Youths won the Continental Tyres Women’s Cup Final before the men’s game and the FAI had made a major drive towards getting people into the ground.
There were substantial give aways of tickets to clubs and schools and while it may not have provided a financial windfall the feeling in the ground and the pictured beamed through the cameras of RTÉ will send the domestic game into the Winter with a sense of confidence.
