From Winning Points to Putts

Golf has always provided a strong relief mechanism for players involved in other sports and when AIG were celebrating 20 years as a partner of the Golfing Union of Ireland and the Irish Ladies Golf Union it was natural that players from the Dublin GAA team would be on hand.

Dean Rock scored the winning point in the 2017 All Ireland Final with as much precision as would be needed for a nine iron approach to the 18th at Carton House and he was showing off his skills alongside Dublin hurler Eoghan O’Donnell and a host of winners from last year’s amateur golfing tournaments.

We have always liked the way in which AIG link the product of insurance to their sporting partnership and yesterday was no different with a 20 percent offer on motor and up to 50 percent offer on home insurance for members of the GUI and ILGU.

In a competitive marketplace, those would be hard deals to beat and they work from the sports organisation point of view through offering a strong reason to renew membership.

“We’re thrilled to be back in the GUI National Headquarters today to officially launch what’s sure to be another exciting year of the AIG Cups and Shields and AIG Irish Close Championship,” said AIG Ireland General Manager Declan O’Rourke.

“We’re delighted with the relationships we have built with both the GUI and ILGU over the years and a special mention to the teams in the GUI and ILGU who we have had the pleasure of working with for 20 years now.”

“A wholehearted thanks to the golfers here today Jamie Fletcher, Ronan Mullarney, Sandra McCaffrey and Molly Dowling and to our ambassadors Dean and Eoghan from Dublin GAA for taking the time to be with us today. We’re looking forward to an exciting summer of golf and GAA and want to wish everyone involved the very best of luck in their respective competitions.”

Having completed a four-year stint at Carton House, the AIG Cups and Shields go back on the road in 2018 and Thurles will play host this September with the finals taking place between the 21st – 23rd September.

This year’s ILGU deciders will be held at Knightsbrook Hotel and Golf Resort from the 26th – 29th September.

“We are delighted to have the support of AIG Insurance as the sponsor of our national Ladies Cups and Shields since 2015,” said Sinead Heraty, CEO of the ILGU.

“The support of AIG is vital to the development of women’s and girls’ golf at club, district and national level. We look forward to continuing this relationship and to grow the game together for some time.”

“AIG’s support of golf in Ireland for twenty years has demonstrated their unwavering commitment to the sport,” added Pat Finn, CEO of the GUI.

“They have been there for some standout moments including Rory McIlroy’s victories in the AIG Irish Close Championship in 2005 and again in 2006, followed by Shane Lowry’s win at Cork in 2007.”

“The Golfing Union of Ireland values the relationship with AIG and we look forward to working with them for many years to come.”
