It’s a massive weekend for sport around the country and that includes a venue normally better known for activity in fashion than fitness.
The inaugural Hula Hoops 3×3 competition will be held at Dundrum Town Centre on Saturday and sees teams from across the men’s and women’s Basketball Ireland Super League and Division One competitions compete for top honours.
Games tip off from 9.30 am and will run throughout the day until the men’s and women’s finals, which take place just before 5 pm. Admission on the day is free and the tournament promises to bring the sport to a whole new audience.
“3×3 is such an exciting form of the game and it will be great for people to be able to see it in Ireland on this scale for the first time,” said Matt Hall of Basketball Ireland speaking on the eve of the tournament.
“With some of the top players in the country playing, we should have an amazing event and it will definitely be worth coming down to Dundrum to see what 3×3 is all about.”
“There will be music and a real party atmosphere with inflatables, spectator seating, mascots and a lot of fun,” added Commercial Manager Conor Meany.
“It’s fast and there is a premium on the exciting ‘three-pointers’ from distance that always light up a game whether it’s at the National Basketball Arena here or on the biggest stages of the NBA.”
“Bringing the game to the people in such a busy facility as Dundrum will draw a lot of attention and we hope to attract a few who are new to the game and might be tempted to take it up.”
The event will be live streamed at Spin 103.8 will be broadcasting from the Centre as well.
It has been promoted widely in and around the centre, including through video content created exclusively with actor Peter Coonan.
It promises to be some party.
