A host of Irish boxers aiming to qualify for this summer’s Olympics in Rio are in action this week at the European Olympic qualifiers in Samsun, Turkey with the semi-finals, finals and box-offs set to be covered live on the RTÉ Player on Friday 15, Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 April.

Additionally Darragh Maloney will be joined by Bernard Dunne, Eric Donovan and Mick Dowling for highlights on RTÉ2 at 8.30pm on Sunday 17 April with commentary from Adrian Eames.

Ireland have a seven-strong team left in contention in Turkey with the Men’s team prospects comprising Brendan Irvine, David Oliver Joyce, Darren O’Neill and Dean Gardiner and the Women’s team featuring Ceire Smith, Katie Taylor and Christina Desmond.

RTÉ Player schedule (assuming Irish involvement) –

Friday 15 April – Day 1: all Semi-finals
Saturday 16 April – Day 2: Finals + Box-offs
Sunday 17 April – Day 3: Finals + Box-offs

There has been no confirmation of a sponsor for the coverage, revealing to an extent the challenges that the sport faces in terms of attracting commercial partnerships, even with the success of the irish boxers over recent years.
