Big news for Women’s Rugby this morning with the announcement that Leinster Rugby and Harlequins are to play a first-ever friendly between the clubs Women’s teams at Twickenham Stadium on 28 December 2019.

The game will be part of the ‘Big Game 12’ event which also sees Harlequins take on Leicester Tigers in the Gallagher Premiership.

There will be entertainment across the whole day from spectacular firework displays to performances from stars from the music industry alongside activities for all ages as well as meet and greets with stars from the rugby world.

This will be the first women’s club game of its kind at the home of English rugby.

“This is a hugely unique and historic event for girls and women’s rugby in Leinster and the whole squad of players and staff can’t wait for it,” said Leinster Women’s Rugby Head Coach Ben Armstrong.

“This has already been a season of firsts with a doubleheader in Energia Park with the men’s team a few months ago, the addition of two extra Development Officers focused on the women’s game in the 12 counties and now this Harlequins game to look forward to in December and at the home of English rugby as well.”

“We are very grateful to Adidas for their help and of course to Harlequins themselves and we look forward to seeing many of the Leinster supporters based in London and in the UK at the game.”

“This is hugely historic,” added team captain Sene Naoupu. “I’m excited for the province, for rugby in Ireland and also really excited for Harlequins, as a former player there myself.”

“We’re incredibly proud to have the support from Adidas for this particular event. We’re excited and we’ll be training hard to make sure it’s a top game.”

Leinster Women won all three of their fixtures in this season’s Interprovincial tournament, sponsored this year for the first time by Vodafone. They have nine players that were named yesterday in the Ireland squad to play against Wales at the UCD Bowl this Sunday.
