Mageean Makes First Final for Ireland Since 1997

Congratulations to Ciara Mageean who has become the first Irish woman to contest a World Championship Athletics Final since Sonia O’Sullivan in 1997.

Mageean made it through in fifth place from her semi final last night and is now one of 12 who will line up in Doha for the Final at 20:55 local time tomorrow, Saturday.

Mageean has won two bronze medals at the distance in European Championships and is one of only three European runners to make the final.

Ten of her rivals tomorrow have run faster personal and season best times so the clock says it will be difficult for her to contend for a medal but getting there is a major achievement.

the next target for Mageean target could be to find the two and a half seconds that would match O’Sullivan’s personal best at the distance, achieved in 1985 at 3:58.85.

Mageean’s best time, achieved at the same Monaco track as O’Sullivan recorded hers is 4:01.21.

Rising star Sarah Healy, who started her third level journey in UCD last month, has a best time so far of 4:09.25.

You can watch Mageean’s Final on BBC2 and on various streaming sites tomorrow.
