It’s not the amount of money, for Women’s Rugby remains an amateur pursuit but this evening’s crunch game against France will likely bring viewership on RTÉ across the three group matches of Ireland’s Women’s Rugby World Cup adventure above that magic number.
Add in the additional numbers watching on eir Sport and through digital channels and this tournament has been a success in every way for Irish Rugby.
312,000 tuned in to Ireland against Japan on Sunday, on top of 322,000 who watched last Wednesday in the game against Australia. That sets a target tonight of 366,000 but with everything on the line as regards a World Cup semi final that is achievable.
And it goes beyond Ireland as well. French mainstream channel FranceRT2 will show its first ever Women’s Rugby international tonight, buoyed by the peak of over 800,000 viewers who tuned in to France’s clash with Australia on Sunday night.
Ireland will need to be at full strength and on top of their game to beat France who have looked a strong contender in their own two wins to date over the same teams.
Still the same will have been said prior to Ireland’s group match breakthrough game against New Zealand in 2014 and they famously won that to set in motion the train of events and support that has led to our hosting the World Cup.
If Ireland win they will be into the World Cup Semi Final talking place next Tuesday, 22nd August at Kingspan Stadium in Belfast. If they don’t then it will be to the same city but for a grading semi final for places below the top four.
Come on you Girls in Green!!
