The inaugural SSE Airtricity League Club Awards took place in a ceremony at Dublin’s City Hall yesterday.
They were established by the FAI to recognise, support and encourage clubs in the Premier and First Division to put as much effort into excellence off the pitch as much as they do on it.
There were a huge number of entries from six categories that were open to submissions, while the SSE Airtricity League Club of the Season was chosen by a judging panel based on entries across all awards.
In the lead-up to the event, two awards were announced with the Regional Sports Centre in Waterford claiming the SSE Airtricity League Pitch of the Year and Derry City winning the SSE Airtricity League Supporters Contribution Award.
There was also a special Dublin City Council Award presented by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Micheal MacDonncha, to Bohemian FC, Shelbourne and St Patrick’s Athletic.
Cabinteely FC won the award for the Multimedia Club of the Year, a tribute to the many smart ways they have engaged the local and the football community with humour, intelligence and flair over the past year.
Bohemian FC won the best family initiative and will be able to build on that platform having also been selected last month as being supported to develop a social enterprise Club in the Community initiative around their North Dublin heartland.
The Awards are a smart way for SSE Airtricity to dial up their engagement with the clubs as opposed to the teams and at a time when community engagement is the increasingly important touchstone for a winning partnership, it bodes well for the future.
