Applications are being sought from this morning by Paralympics Ireland for the position of Chef de Mission for Tokyo 2020.
The Chef de Mission of the 2020 Irish Paralympic Team will act as the team leader as well as being responsible for the overall operational and logistical preparation and participation of Team Ireland in the lead up to and at the Tokyo Paralympic Games.
The position is a key one in terms of giving our Paralympic athletes the best shot at matching the massive success which they have achieved at the last two Paralympic Games in London and Rio.
It wil be a complex role demanding a cool head and experience of dealing with multiple projects and characters. As one of the biggest gatherings of sports people on the planet, there is no question of the Games being delayed. The teams have a deadline which can never be extended.
That’s the kind of challenge which the person Paralympics Ireland are seeking will relish and there is expected to be a significant level of interest.
The experience gained in hosting the Allianz European Para Swimming Championships in August will have given a rare taste of what the requirements are from an organiser perspective and the team which oversaw that successful delivery will be those who will be part of the support team behind the wider athlete body over the next near two years.
The role consists of three main phases from Planning in advance of the Games covering all aspects of budgeting, travel, logistics and stakeholder relations, through the Pre Games Camp at Narita and the Games themselves and rounding out with a review of how things have gone.
The role was filled by former President of Cyclin Ireland Denis Toomey for Rio in 2016.
A full outline of the role and the requirements can be found at the Paralympics.ie website.
The deadline for application is 5 pm on Thursday, December 13th.
