Paul Merson is the latest big name to be announced as a keynote speaker at One-Zero 2017 which takes place at Croke Park on October 17th.
The former Arsenal star, who is now known to a younger audience as a top television pundit, joins a star-studded line-up that already includes Frank Bruno and Hope Solo.
Tickets for the sports and sports technology conference are now on sale from One-Zero.com priced from €159.
Paul Merson enjoyed a long and successful career at Arsenal having first joined the club as an apprentice in 1984. He established himself as a regular in George Graham’s side by the late 1980’s and success followed in the shape of League, FA Cup, League Cup and Cup Winners Cup honours over the course of a twelve year stay at Highbury.
He went on to have successful stints at Middlesbrough and Portsmouth, both of whom he helped to promotion to the Premier League and also at Aston villa with whom he qualified for the 2000 FA Cup final.
A former PFA Young Player of the Year, Paul also holds 21 England caps and held the distinction of being the only player in England’s 1998 World Cup squad not to play for a top-flight club; Middlesbrough were his club at the time.
Merson enjoyed this hugely successful playing career against the backdrop of serious alcohol, cocaine and gambling addictions.
Having retired from playing, Merson has carved out a place for himself in the hearts of television viewers through his work in the media with Sky television as a very popular pundit on the Soccer Saturday Show and the Fantasy Football Show.
At One-Zero Paul Merson will talk openly about the highs of his football career, the lows of his addiction demons and life in the glare of the media spotlight as a high-profile pundit.
“I’ve been involved in football for most of my life and seen the game in England evolve from the old First Division to the Premier League,” said Merson.
“I’ve enjoyed success and suffered failures along the way both in my professional and personal life. I look forward to coming to Dublin and discussing the highs and the lows and giving my opinions of how football has changed for the better and, in some cases, for the worse.”
Business leader and Social Entrepreneur, Jim Breen, who founded Cycle Against Suicide and PulseLearning will interview Paul at One-Zero.
“Paul has had an amazing career on the pitch and he has continued his success as a top class pundit, said Breen an EY Entrepreneur Of The Year nominee in 2007 who has become a vocal and intelligent commentator on social issues.”
“I’m very much looking forwarding to Paul sharing some new insights about sport and about his life on and off the pitch. It will be a fascinating and entertaining story for the One-Zero audience”
“Paul Merson’s story is a very human one, said One-Zero co-founder Rob Hartnett.
“The life of a top professional footballer might seem like a dream but, as we know, footballers have failings too.”
“We’re delighted Paul will be joining us at Croke Park to share his unique story and thank him for the openness with which we know he will approach the event.”
