Pope’s Football Final Moves

We’ve had a Pope in Ireland before who was known for his prowess as a goalkeeper but now Pope Francis is having an even bigger impact by creating one last Sunday in September for an All Ireland Football Final.

The GAA confirmed yesterday that the Football Final which was originally going to be scheduled for August 26th will now take place one week later with the Hurling Final being played on August 19th.

Though there has not yet been any confirmation that Croke Park will be needed for the World Meeting of Families, or indeed whether the Pope himself will attend, plans have to be put in place for all contingencies.

If he does come it will require a large scale venue and there is none quite as good for that as Croke Park.

Whether he will be persuaded to wear a GAA shirt like Ed Sheeran was last year is very doubtful but he does like his sport and maybe we could yet be swapping in an O’Neill’s Dublin or Mayo shirt in place of the San Lorenzo one he is pictured holding above in Buenos Aires.

The draw for the 2018 Championships which will both feature new formats in Hurling and Football will take place live on RTÉ2 next Thursday, October 19th.
