Reaction to Government Funding

The announcement on Friday of €70 Million funding to help sporting organisations emerge from the damaging financial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic was warmly welcomed across the sector.

Sport Ireland

“Following engagement with Sport Ireland, we will invite applications from funded bodies, which will require them to demonstrate and verify what is required for them to continue in terms of funding.”

“These applications will be processed by Sport Ireland in line with our robust grant processing procedures and high standards of due diligence.”

“It is important to highlight that only those organisations in absolute need will be assisted. It is acknowledged that there may be a need to support previously commercial activities to get them back up and running again as the absence of these may put a strain on an organisation’s viability and its wider participation objectives.”

“We thank Ministers Ross and Griffin and look forward to working with the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport and the National Governing Bodies to get sport back on track.”

“The GAA would like to place on record its gratitude to the Government for the support package announced this evening.”

“This funding will greatly assist our units in the weeks and months ahead as they prepare for a return to activity.”

“We thank the Government and Ministers Ross and Griffin for their solidarity and support with this vote of confidence in Irish football and in our staff and our Association as we continue to work our way through the COVID-19 crisis.”

“Our funds have been tested greatly by the effects of COVID-19 so this funding from Government is most welcome. It is also a testament to the hard work of all our staff in these trying times when they have continued to work to get Irish football back onto the playing fields.”

“We have just announced a pathway for a Safer Return to Football for all our players, clubs and affiliates so this is a very positive day for Irish football.”

“The IRFU welcomes the announcement from government today which permits the return of sport from the 29th June.”

“Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the IRFU, the provinces and the clubs have illustrated their commitment to the safety of its players and volunteers.”

“The process of implementing the appropriate public health measures in our clubs has accelerated in recent weeks and we are committed to returning to rugby safely.”

“The IRFU in consultation with the provinces will assess the latest update from the Irish government and will communicate with clubs in due course.”

“Clubs operating in Northern Ireland will be updated based on the NI Executive Coronavirus Recovery Plan.”

Basketball Ireland

“We welcome this news, we were to the fore in asking for this Resilience Fund, it is good to see that we have been listened to.”

“So now obviously we need to get the detail, what do we need to do to help our clubs and to help the game throughout the country. So yes absolutely we welcome it and now we get on with funding the restart of our sport and Irish sport in general.”

Rowing Ireland

“Supporting Clubs and Leading our Sport is a crucial pillar of our strategy. We will continue the work of the COVID-19 Working Group; we will also collaborate with our partners in Sport Ireland and the Federation of Irish Sport to give clubs all the necessary information for the return to rowing, regattas and the funding options available.”

Federation of Irish Sport

“This financial assistance will go a long way in helping sports organisations who are facing particular financial difficulty to get back to business and to adapt to the new reality as restrictions lift.”

“We welcome the government’s acknowledgement of our call for support, and their commitment to investing in sport at local and national level to help Irish sport through this unprecedented emergency and back on to the road to recovery. The Federation will continue to work with its members and Sport Ireland to maximise levels of physical activity and participation in sport in Ireland.”
