Running For a Laugh to Build Morale

Former World Champion and triple Olympian, Derval O’Rourke, together with Dublin’s five-time All Ireland Football champion Philly McMahon, were on Spencer Dock in Dublin yesterday to launch the 2018 Staff Relay Series with PwC at the firm’s Headquarters.

The Staff Relay Series is a team event for five runners each running five kilometres on a track through the Phoenix Park and finishing through a tented village where companies have their own social bases from which to cheer on their colleagues. This year’s event is the second in which PwC have been involved as title sponsors and takes place on Thursday, May 24 @ 18:00

Over 300 companies took part in last year’s event and race organisers expect to see up to 7,000 participants from all over the greater Dublin area and beyond at the 2018 night.

Sponsors PwC is the largest single contributor to the event. Speaking at the launch, Susan Kilty, People Partner, PwC, said: “Last year we had over 75 teams participating in the Staff Relay Series which proved wonderful excitement, fun and rivalry and we are delighted to be involved again in 2018.

“Supporting the 2018 Staff Relay Series complements our firm’s wellness programme “Boost”, which encourages our people to keep their mind and body fit and healthy.”

“It’s a tailor-made event for fun, fitness and teamwork among office friends and colleagues and is an accessible event for all classes of runners from the serious to the fun runners.”

Helping launch the 2018 event, Derval O’Rourke said: “I am proud to be a PwC Race Ambassador for the Staff Relay Series. This event epitomises all that I stand for combining sport and healthy living with excellence, professionalism and good fun.”

“There is no barrier to entry, you don’t have to have an elite athletic background or even a massively high level of fitness.”

Teamwork

“Because it’s a team event the focus is on teamwork not individual times which removes the biggest hurdle people often face when first starting out running.”

“It’s also great to be able to relax with your workmates afterwards, feeling that you’ve accomplished something together as a team.”

Join us later this week when we have an interview with Derval O’Rourke looking at her transition from World Champion athlete to nutrition focused business owner and at why she is looking forward to one sporting event more than any other during March.

Philly McMahon also a PwC Staff Relay Series Ambassador for the event.

“I love the concept of the Staff Relay. It changes running from an individual sport to that of a team one, which I am an obvious advocate of.”

“It also provides companies an alternative way of socializing with workmates whilst being responsible and looking after physical and mental health.”

The final kilometre of the relay route passes through the Relay Village – a tented area where companies set up the office for the night – and colleagues can cheer and encourage their teammates as they complete the final leg of the relay before socialising over refreshments.

Morale

The objective of the event is not about winning medals or posting record times but on building morale, camaraderie and teamwork whilst having the craic afterwards in the ‘Staff Relay Village’.

Last year’s PwC teams were headed by Managing Partner Fergal O’Rourke who is committed to running again this year.

“The vision of the Staff Relay Series is clear – to provide a unique and special opportunity to build team spirit and create a sense of healthy competition within the workplace and to bring a sense of fun to a running event characterised with our hashtag #Run4aLaugh,” said Pierce O’Callaghan, Director of race organiser Global Relay Events.

“The event has grown from strength to strength since the first run in 2011 and, with this exciting partnership with PwC, we are confident that we can continue to grow the event exponentially both in Dublin and throughout the other urban areas in Ireland.”
