Searching for Sports Book of the Year

eir Sport is looking once more for the Irish sports book of the year.  Now in its third year, the eir Sport Sports Book of the Year was launched yesterday with a call for nominations to recognise and reward the very best in Irish sports writing.

The criteria are that the book should cover sporting interest and either be by an Irish author or cover an Irish sporting subject matter and be published in 2017.

The competition is being run in partnership with Publishing Ireland and the winning author will receive a €1,500 cash prize and a specially commissioned trophy.

€10,000 worth of TV advertising on eir Sport is also on offer for the winning entry.

This is the third year of an initial four year commitment by eir Sport to the awards scheme. So far it has had a strong Gaelic Football feel to the winners but who knows in 2017.

Last year’s award was claimed by Kerry footballer, Kieran Donaghy for ‘What Do You Think of That? which went on to be one of the best-selling books of 2016.

In 2015, former Dublin football goalkeeper John Leonard was awarded for ‘Dub Sub Confidential’.

“eir Sport is delighted to announce the third year of the eir Sport Sports Book of the Year Award,” said Glen Killane Managing Director of eir TV & Sport.  “We’re looking forward to recognising Irish sports writing and excited to see all of the entries.

‘Huge thanks once again, must go to Publishing Ireland for continued their support of the award and we look forward to working with them over the coming months.’

“Together we’re looking for the best sports book to win this award which will hopefully go on to be one of the best-selling books of 2017,” added Ronan Colgan, President of Publishing Ireland.

“This award is about high-quality writing and good storytelling and I call on publishers and authors to make sure that their book is in with a chance.”

Entries will be sought from publishers over the next month with the closing date for entries in early October. A long list will be announced later that month before a short list is announced in late November. The winner of the eir Sport Sports Book of the Year 2017 will then be announced in December, just in time for the lucrative Christmas market.
