Sport Crashes the Oscars

Sport does not often get to share space on the stage at The Oscars but last night in Los Angeles was an exception not once but twice.

Kobe Bryant’s retirement letter was produced as an animated short film and won the award in that category.

If one was an outlier for sport, the contribution was doubled when Icarus the documentary feature on the Russian doping ‘factory’ led by Grigory Rodchenkov, the exposure of which has led to the banning of Russian from competing at the Olympics and a renewed effort towards ensuring proper focus on anti-doping in world sport.

Icarus will potentially go down in history for another reason as the first Oscar to be won by a movie produced for Netflix.
