Forces are gathering ahead of next month’s IOC meeting to determine which sports might be introduced for the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.
Tokyo will see Karate, Baseball / Softball, Sport Climbing, Surfing and skateboarding added to the mix and some or all of those could feature again in Paris.
Breakdancing is being touted as among the new activities pitching for inclusion in Paris and eSports is also mounting a strong campaign, backed by substantial commercial support for events that are taking place around the world.
One of the more traditional sports that is going again despite being rejected by London, Rio and Tokyo is Squash which last week launched a Squash Goes Gold campaign which it hopes will get it over the line.
“Squash is played in some of the most spectacular locations in the world – in front of the Pyramids of Giza, on the harbourside-front in Hong Kong, inside Grand Central Terminal in New York – and our ability to showcase the beauty, youth and innovative drive of Paris by setting up an all-glass court anywhere in the city is something few sports can do,” said WSF President Jacques Fontaine said.
“Squash Goes Gold will allow the squash community to further unite behind our Olympic campaign and play their active part in helping our sport secure its place at the Olympic Games.”
