At 6-50 local time this morning at the Colonial Country Club in Texas, Ryan Palmer will strike the first ball of the restart of professional golf in the United States.

There will be a strong Irish presence with Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry and Graeme McDowell all in the field and ready to kick start the resumption of a season suspended after Day One of the Players Championship at Sawgrass back in March.

There will be no spectators on the course but there will be extensive media coverage. Sky Sports will devote nearly 12 hours of coverage from 1245 today, a package that will also be available on Now TV.

There will also be innovative coverage on Twitter where they will be partnering with a number of broadcasters including Sky Sports, CBS and NBC to bring nine individual live streams some with celebrity commentary.

“This first-ever Twitter Multicast will give golf fans a viewing experience they won’t find anywhere else,” according to Twitter Head of US Sports Partnerships TJ Adeshola.

“By adding conversation and commentary from a range of Twitter notables to premium golf content, the Multicast will have something for everyone, regardless if you’re looking for real-time reactions, analysis or just some laughs to pair with live footage from Colonial.”

“This is a prime example of how to create a richer, more customised fan experience through the power of Twitter.”

The return of the golf is another important step on the road back to normal.

Plans are proceeding with the staging of the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin starting on September 25th.
