You Tube Ad Blitz

The Superbowl is probably the biggest single event in terms of sports marketing each year and this week we will highlight some of the elements that are catching the news stateside and around the world.

First up is the fact that You Tube will be broadcasting its own half time show this year for the first time.

In Arizon Katy Perry and Lenny Kravitz will be entertaining the crowd and the mainstream TV audience but the Google owned online channel will be going head to head with a collection of live broadcasts from some of You Tube’s biggest draws over the past year as well as spoof ads, comedy sketches and dives into pools of beer and cheese.

115 million people across the US tuned into last year’s Superbowl on NBC and advertising rates peaked at $4.5 million for a 30 second spot.  There are 60 million subscribers to the channels of those who will be part of the You Tube half time show but whether the world is ready to collectively favour such fragmented special interests over the mass market ‘conversation’ appeal of NBC will be interesting to see.

It is worth noting that You Tube does not celebrate the tenth anniversary of the name being registered until February 14th.  In 2006 it was named as Time Magazine’s ‘Person of the Year’.

It is not beyond the bounds of possibility that in another ten years it will be the main broadcast partner of the NFL and other sports.
