Katie Taylor lit up a special weekend for Irish Women in Sport on Saturday night when she won her 15th professional fight at the manchester Arena, becoming a two-weight World Champion and securing her fifth World Title.
It is likely that she will now return to the United States with headline fights being talked of with Cecilia Braekhus or Amanda Serrano. There is also the prospect of a rematch with Delfine Persoon who came closest to ending her unbeaten run at Madison Square Garden back in June.
Taylor won on Saturday taking seven of the ten rounds though a punch in the third round had caused her eye to swell and gave rise to fears that the big-hitting Christina Linardatou.
The Greek boxer was unhappy after the fight but that is the way of professional boxing and all those who were watching the fight with a neutral eye were unanimous in giving it to Taylor.
She joins Steve Collins and Carl Frampton as the third boxer in Irish history to win World titles at two weights and has also secured once more her place in the hearts of Irish sports fans who have stuck consistently by her since well before her Olympic Gold in London over seven years ago now.
This was the second sell-out fight at the Manchester Arena with a capacity of 21,000. That makes it far bigger than any indoor venue here in Ireland.
It looks like it will be a while yet then before we get a chance to see her fight live in Dublin but imagine what an occasion that could prove to be at some point in the future.
