TG4 at Croke ParkThe importance of sport in TV scheduling was highlighted again in the past week with news that TG4 has broken its record number of viewers for a single event with the broadcast of the Allianz National League Football final between Dublin and Kerry, followed by the Laochra celebrations.

The audience figure of 621,000 beat the previous high achieved during the Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2014.  It represented 38 per cent of the viewing public at the time.

The number climbed to 729,000 when taking into account people who had tuned in at any stage of the broadcast, produced for TG4 by Nemeton.

“This weekend was always going to be a historic occasion in Croke Park,” he said “not just for the eight footballing counties participating in this year’s Allianz Football League Finals but their supporters and the large cast and crew for the wonderful Laochra project,” said TG4 Director general Pól Ó Gallchóir.

“The record-breaking TV audience bears testament to the value of what TG4 stands for, the quality of the content that it provides and the audience engagement.”

Through the next week we will be looking at different elements of the changing nature of television and sport, ahead of a keynote breakfast session being hosted by Sport for Business at the studios of RTÉ on Thursday morning, May 12th.

Breakfast and networking from 0730 will be followed by an overview of the changing nature of TV Sport and two panel discussions with those at the top of the decision making game in Irish TV sport.
