US gaming giant DraftKings officially opened its first international office in Dublin last night.
The company specialises in fantasy gaming where players select teams of players based on a cap of value and then score points according to how well they perform in a game or series of games.
There are a variety of options but most revolve around paying a stake and then competing against others in competitions that can range from two or three to many thousands with the prize structure determined by how many are playing and what the stake is.
DraftKings make their money by taking a commission on the pool size.
“It is a great honour to build our team and brand in Dublin – a prime destination for technology and sports gaming – and we could not be more excited to tap into the rich source of Irish talent,” said Chief Technology Officer Travis Dunn speaking to Sport for Business last night.
“We have offices in Boston, New York, New Jersey, Las Vegas and San Francisco (pictured above) but there is a shortage of gaming experience in the US and so we wanted to reach out to attract international talent to come and work for us.”
“We looked at a number of options but Ireland was a clear winner with its talented workforce that understand what we are about and how we can continually develop our offering.”
“We worked closely with a great team at Sports Tech Ireland and they convinced us that Ireland should be our number one pick.”
“We are now recruiting actively and we expect to have a team of up to 50 in place just off St Stephens Green by the end of this year.”
This workforce will complement employees across the US. Since October 2018, DraftKings has seen a 40 per cent increase in its company headcount.
In the last two years, it opened its new global headquarters in Boston, and new offices in Las Vegas and San Francisco, while also maintaining offices in New York City and Hoboken, New Jersey.
It recently announced a 20,000-square-foot expansion of its Boston global headquarters, already at 105,000-square-feet, and has taken additional space in the city to accommodate their rapidly growing Boston-based team.
The new office features state-of-the-art technology and sports icon themed conference rooms.
The company is a valuable addition to the community focused on sport and business in Ireland and we will look forward to working with them on a number of initiatives over the course of the coming years.
