Women in Sport 2017 – Cliona O’Leary

Sport for Business, in partnership with Liberty Insurance, is publishing our third annual list of the 50 Most Influential Women in Irish Sport.

This is not about Women’s sport, it is about the influence that women are wielding across all sport.  We will identify leaders on and off the field of play.  They will include those who are role models in terms of their abilities on and off the field of play.  They will come from teams and individual sports, from sponsorship partners, from the media, from the administrative corridors of power and from places where influence may be subtle but no less powerful.


Cliona O’Leary

Cliona O’Leary is the Deputy Head of Sport at RTÉ and is responsible for the station’s TV coverage of our greatest sporting moments.

She was out in Rio as the battle between the sporting achievements on the water and the news frenzy over the arrest of Pat Hickey put sport on the front as well as the back of every media outlet in the country.

She manages the massive demands of being the nations eyes on the sporting fields of Ireland and the world with a cool calm and is an intelligent thinker and commentator on what television can and cannot do in the world of sport.

The rollover between the big box coverage and the digital transmission through the RTÉ player and other providers is happening on her watch and it is an environment that is changing not so much each year as almost every day.

RTÉ is one year into an exclusive free to air agreement for the GAA and 2018 will bring new scheduling demands with the revised Championship format.  There will be no NatWest 6 Nations coverage on RTÉ for the first time next year but with a FIFA World Cup and so much more to fill the screen time, O’Leary’s influence on the world of irish sport will be as strong as ever over the coming months and years.
