Women’s World Cup Going Down Under

The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 will be staged in Australia and New Zealand, following a vote taken by the FIFA Council during its meeting held via videoconference yesterday.

The joint bid submitted by Football Federation Australia and New Zealand Football received 22 of the 35 valid votes cast by the FIFA Council members in the first ballot, with the Colombian Football Association having obtained 13 votes.

The European block of voting, led by UEFA President Alexsander Ceferin had voted for the Colombia bid.

The 2023 Finals will be the first to extend to 32 teams and with the Republic of Ireland maintaining a strong position to qualify for the next European Championship Finals which will now be staged in 2022, there is a strong possibility that they will be there.
