Hockey U18 DAA 2013The Dublin Airport Authority is getting involved with a number of ‘Gathering’ based sports initiatives this summer, both in hockey and mass participation.
The Authority was yesterday unveiled as a commercial partner of the Electric Ireland U18 Women’s EuroHockey Championships which will take place at UCD, Dublin from 29th July to 4th August 2013.
It’s shopping centre ‘The Loop’ is one of the sponsors of the Dublin Rock’n Roll half marathon taking place in the city for the first time on August 5th.
The hockey tournament, running as part of The Gathering, will feature teams from Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, England, Russia, France and Wales as well as the Irish hosts.
The action will take place at the National Hockey Stadium on UCD’s Belfield Campus over six days starting on Monday, July 29th.
“We are delighted to have Dublin Airport Authority in as a commercial sponsor alongside Electric Ireland for this prestigious international event said Irish Hockey CEO Mike Heskin. “DAA’s support allows us to further showcase all that our wonderful country has to offer as part of The Gathering initiative and ensures we can put on a tournament to remember for the visiting teams, many of which will have their first experiences of Ireland when they touchdown in Dublin Airport later this week.”
Dublin Airport has previously been more involved in the arts rather than sport with an association to the Dublin Theatre Festival and the Business to Arts Awards.  It has been involved with sport as a local partner including at local GAA clubs around North County Dublin.
These latest two moves will hopefully be the start of a greater reach into the sporting world which, through sports tourism inbound and outbound is a major driver of traffic through the airport.
