Katie Taylor has secured her 5th consecutive World Championship title in Korea.

Early morning viewers on TG4 were able to watch as she took a lead from the first round and never lost it, running out a unanimous points winner over her Azerbaijan’s Yana Allekseevana.

The fight drew an appreciative crowd on this side of the world as RTÉ Sport’s Des Cahill rounded up a worldwide diaspora of fans giving a blow by blow commentary on twitter.

Irish Rugby Captain Fiona Coghlan was up watching as were many others across the sporting spectrum.

Taylor is now level with Mary Korn of India on five world titles and will doubtless look to beat that total next time round, ideally after securing a second Olympic title in Rio next year.

Saying it like that makes it sound an awful lot easier than it will be but for now, this morning we can truly celebrate another landmark for perhaps Ireland’s greatest ever sporting star.
