The Croke park Classic has been shortlisted for the European Sport Tourism Event of the Year to be awarded for the first time at next week’s Shannon Airport Sport Tourism Summit in Limerick.
The Classic’ planned repeat in 2016 has been pulled after a GAA bid to attract promotional funding support from Government was not approved.
The other events in the running for the award include the IAAF World Half Marathon Championship 2014; the Tour de France Grand Depart Yorkshire; the European MTB Championships in Ballyhoura; the Prudential Ride in London and the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in Scotland.
Belfast and Limerick have both been shortlisted for the European Sport Tourism City 2016.
Other major events in the Irish Sporting Calendar to have been shortlisted from over 200 nominations include The Special Olympics Games in Limerick with sponsor Eircom, Punchestown Race week, the Irish Champions Weekend, Limerick Rugby World Club 7’s; Athlone Institute of Technology and the Killarney Adventure Race.
