The Irish U17 Soccer team gets their European Championship tournament underway in Iceland today at 2pm. The opening game of the group stage is against France. This will be followed by matches on Thursday against Switzerland and on Sunday against Norway. The side was unbeaten in qualifying for the finals and hopes are high that they will go as far as last year’s team in making it through to the final stages.

Dreams turned to dust for the irish Women’s Hockey team in Valencia over the weekend. A devastating shout out Quarter Final loss to China, after topping the group ahead of South Africa, Germany and the USA was a cruel blow and the team suffered back to back heavy defeats against the first and last of those teams on Saturday and Sunday to leave Valencia with only an 8th place finish.
China will be heading to the Rio Olympics after making it all the way to a Final defeat against Great Britain for the Irish team it’s a case of what might have been.

The Women’s World Cup in Canada has advanced to the Quarter Final stage without Brazil who were beaten in a surprise upset by Australia over the weekend. Canada and France , Germany and China also joined joined them while today’s action sees England and the United Staes bidding to make it to the last eight as well.
