It’s very simple really.  You look at the image above, you take out your phone and tap out the numbers then boom, €4 that you might have spent on a piece of cake has helped to transform a life.

Today is Special Olympics Ireland’s national Collection Day.  It got Des Cahill reprising his Dancing Dessie role to help promote the cause but the real stars are those who will be out and about on streets, in towns and all over the country shaking a bucket.

This year try not to look the other way.  Look up rather than down, into the eyes of the collector and throw in what you can.  It really will make a difference.

Special Olympics Ireland is seeking to raise €650,000 today to meet the needs of its programme and help transform lives through sport.

Over 3,500 volunteers have signed up across over 600 locations throughout the island of Ireland to shake buckets and stage fundraising events.

Special Olympics Irelands’ Collection Day is once again proudly supported by eir.

“We have proudly worked alongside Special Olympics Ireland since 1985 and we have seen first-hand the difference this organisation makes to thousands of athletes, and their families, every single day,” said open eir Managing Director Carolann Lennon.

“Special Olympics Ireland positively transforms lives through sport and this is only possible because of the support of people throughout Ireland on Collection Day.”

“On May 5th eir employees will join volunteers in towns and villages right across the country to raise funds. If you haven’t volunteered before, this is your chance, join the volunteer team near you and shake a bucket for Special Olympics Ireland.”
