The first live stream broadcast from GAANow on Facebook took place last night and you can watch a playback of the programme below.
Speaking to Sport for Business yesterday ahead of the show The GAA’s Digital Communications Manager Lisa Hayden told us that “Broadening our non-match content into areas such as social programming has been on the cards since the earliest days of GAANOW planning and tonight is a landmark occasion.”
The show, as promised, did go beyond the normal line up of hurling and GAA commentators with Louise Duffy hosting and Colm O’Regan proving a star turn as a comedian first and Cork fan second.
The fact that Louise mentioned ‘talking shite’ live on the programme is indicative of the fact that this was an alternative version of GAA media albeit without straying too far.
The use of clip rights brought a level of quality content that many similar live stream shows on social can only dream of and with an audience primarily drawn from the under 24 demographic stayed with the show to generate a viewing number of 19,000 by this morning.
The Sports Joe Live show that went out at 2130 and featured Diarmaid O’Sullivan and Lar Corbett, as well as a lot of looking back through sketches on Conor McGregor, drew a 25,000 viewership so getting that close to a six month established show will be greeted as a winner in Croke Park.
There will be another similar show ahead of the All Ireland Football Championship in two weeks time and it is expected that these will lead to a regular programme offering from 2018. Future developments could include a live studio audience as well as a social one.
This is the direction that sports content is heading at rapid speed. That the GAA should be right there in the vanguard only months into the new media rights deal that allowed the internal use of clips, is a huge credit to the team of Alan Milton, Lisa Hayden and Noel Quinn charged with making it all come to life.
The GAA, RTÉ Sport, TG4 and GAAGo are among the more than 220 organisations that play an active part of the Sport for Business community.
