The National Club Athletics Championships take place next weekend at Morton Stadium in Santry.  Athletics Ireland and sponsors Woodies DIY are trying an innovative approach to ensuring a loud and colourful crowd by encouraging juvenile club members to attend and come with an added splash of colour in support of their senior club members. They are however missing a trick.
The noise at any big event where juvenile members are encouraged is a real step up on when they are not and the experience can make all the difference to keeping them involved.
The promotion works well for Woodies DIY which focuses on paint and colour as one of its biggest sellers so the promotion, at a cost of a €500 prize for the club deemed the most colourful and creative on the day, is a low cost, effective way of leveraging the sponsorship.
Unfortunately, despite 17 dedicated sales positions on the home page of the Woodies DIY website, there is no mention of the fact that the Championships are on or that the company is supporting this initiative.
It is often the case that promotions happen just too quickly to get everything in place but it seems an opportunity missed, for the moment, for Woodies to broadcast to its website visitors that it is a proud supporter of Irish athletics, particularly at a time when it is in the spotlight only weeks out from the London 2012 Olympic Games.
