The Federation of Irish Sport published its monthly newsletter for National Governing Bodies and others in and around sport yesterday and the listing of some of the key sporting achievements over the last month makes for pretty spectacular reading.

Sport is generally all about moving on to the next big thing but in order to fully appreciate where you are, it is sometimes good to take a breath and look at where you have come from.

Here is the list of achievements…

The Irish Women’s Hockey Team coming second at the World Cup in London and rising from 16th to 8th in the World rankings. They were great fun to watch all the way through their incredible journey.

Rhys McClenaghan was simply brilliant in setting his own personal best on Pommel Horse in Glasgow and bringing home Gold from the European Championships.

Ellen Keane and Nicole Turner brought the roof down at the national Aquatic Centre with Gold, Silver and Bronze at the Allianz European Para Swimming Championships at the Sport Ireland National Sports Campus, more of which above…

Thomas Barr was relaxed and smiling all the way through and came good with Bronze in the 400 Metre Hurdles at the European Championships in Berlin.

Shane Ryan swam his way to Bronze, in Glasgow. The Swim Ireland team celebrated deeper as well with three finals and ten semi-finals achieved.

Katie-George Dunlevy and Eve McCrystal became world champions again as they defend successfully their world title in the Women’s B Tandem Road Race at the Para-cycling World Championships in Maniago, Italy.

Jason Smyth won Double Gold again, his 17th and 18th major championship wins, at the Para-Athletics European Championships in Berlin.

Greta Streimikyte, Orla Barry, Noelle Lenihan and Niamh McCarthy were also in Gold Medal winning form while Orla Comerford and Jordan Lee secured Bronze in their events.

Conn Doherty won a Silver medal at the Malmo Europe Cup in Triathlon

Congratulations to Deaf Sport Ireland on the very successful hosting of the World Deaf Golf Championships at Carton House

Sophie Earley beat off opposition from the USA, Guatemala, Romania, Puerto Rico, India and Ecuador on her way to Silver in the International Table tennis Hopes Event in Alicante

Irish rowers Paul and Gary O’Donovan won silver at the European Rowing Championships

Congratulations to the 13 team members of Team Ireland who claimed an incredible 22 medals at the World Handball Championships in Minnesota.

Karla Cunningham won Silver and Bronze at the European Deaf Swimming Championships in Poland in July

Martina McMahon led a 22 Strong Medal rush from team Ireland at the World Handball Championships in Minnesota.

Horse Sport Ireland has had a very successful month including winning Multiple international events at the Stena Line Dublin Horse Show.

Jenny Egan became the first Irish athlete to win an International Canoe Federation Senior World Championship medal on Sunday as she took bronze in the K1 5,000m event.

Lara Gillespie struck gold last week in the Junior Women’s Points Race at the track cycling European Championships in Aigle, Switzerland.

Finally, well done to Jude Gallagher who claimed Bronze at the World Youth Boxing Championships in Budapest on Tuesday.
