Social Media has changed the way that sport is consumed and followed. It has broken down the traditional channels through which fans, sports and even players have been able to engage.
Twitter has been very much to the fore in that and a new competition to discover the best Irish sporting tweeters has come down to a final shortlist of nine.
The RaboTweeties are run by Digital Times and sponsored by the bank that has built much of the awareness of its RabDirect Pro 12 association on the back of the micro blogging site.
The final sports shortlist includes three GAA accounts @GAAScores, @DubMatchTracker and @OfficialCorkGAA; two from Rugby with @BrianODriscoll and @IRFURugby; two media sources @SetantaSports and @theScore_ie and one each from soccer @SeanStLedger12, and WWE @WWESheamus.

Twitter is a great source of news on what is happening in areas that you are interested in, and has become the first and fastest source of breaking news around teams and events. Every sports organisation is adept at using it with Hockey and Cricket standing out as two that are among the most engaging.
