Genesis Links Limited has announced a €7 million redevelopment of Seapoint Golf Links in County Louth, with three-time Major winner Pádraig Harrington set to play a central role in the course redesign.

The investment represents one of the most significant recent commitments to golf infrastructure in Ireland and will bring major changes to the 220-acre links property near Drogheda.

Harrington will collaborate on the redesign with Giulia Ferroni of Leeds Golf Design, a protégé of leading golf course architect Martin Hawtree, while Roddy Carr will bring his extensive international golf development experience to the project.

For Harrington, it will represent a notable new chapter, with Seapoint becoming his first full 18-hole golf course design project.

The plans include four completely new holes, seven new green complexes, major alterations elsewhere on the course, redesigned and repositioned bunkering, natural sand areas and substantial upgrades to both the irrigation system and practice facilities.

The objective is to create greater consistency between Seapoint’s existing two nine-hole loops while making fuller use of the natural linksland available across the site.

The latest commitment follows more than €2 million already invested by Genesis Links since its acquisition of Seapoint in late 2021, covering improvements to both the golf course and clubhouse.

During that period, the club has also developed its profile as an event venue, hosting four major international tournaments, including the OFX Irish Legends and the Flogas Irish Men’s Amateur Open Championship.

Located alongside County Louth Golf Club at Baltray, Seapoint sits within one of Ireland’s strongest concentrations of links golf.

The ambition is to strengthen Seapoint’s appeal as both a members’ club and an international visitor destination, contributing to the wider tourism proposition of County Louth and the Boyne Valley region.

“This is a major investment in the long-term future of Seapoint and in the potential of an exceptional piece of linksland,” said Marty Carr of Genesis Links Limited.

“Our ambition is to create a golf course that is more distinctive, more enjoyable and better equipped for the future, while building on the character and qualities that members value about Seapoint today.”

“The scale of the investment reflects our confidence in Seapoint and in County Louth as one of Ireland’s outstanding golf destinations.”

“I’m hugely excited that Seapoint will be my first 18-hole golf course design project,” added Harrington.

“I’ve known the course for many years, and it provides a tremendous natural setting, so having the opportunity to help shape its next chapter is very special to me.”

“There is enormous potential here. Our ambition is to create something distinctive and memorable that members will love playing regularly, while also offering the quality and challenge of a leading links course.”

The scale of the redevelopment will require Seapoint to close from early January 2027.

Subject to weather and the successful grow-in of the new playing areas, the course is expected to reopen in spring 2028.

Sport for Business Perspective

A €7 million investment is significant in any part of Irish sport, but it is particularly interesting because it signals confidence in golf as both a sporting and tourism asset.

Seapoint is making a long-term commercial decision to close the course, reshape the product, and return to market with something it believes can compete at a higher level domestically and internationally.

Bringing Pádraig Harrington into his first full 18-hole design project adds immediate profile and gives the redevelopment a point of difference that should carry weight with overseas visitors and Irish golfers alike.

There is also a broader regional story. With Seapoint beside County Louth at Baltray, there is potential to strengthen County Louth as a genuine golfing destination rather than simply a collection of individual courses.

Golf tourism has long been one of the strongest examples of sport creating wider economic value, through accommodation, hospitality, transport and international visitor spend. The challenge is that the global market for premium golf experiences is increasingly competitive.

That makes the redevelopment of Seapoint worth watching well beyond the boundaries of the golf course.
