Mark Scanlon stepped into the role of League Director at the FAI last summer, two weeks ahead of the resumption of the 2020 season after the Covid lockdown.

“It was a baptism of fire,” he tells us in this exclusive interview with Sport for Business this morning.

“We were very much going into the unknown but we managed to the season completed at all the senior levels and some of the underage as well. It was difficult for everyone but we got there.”

Key takeaways:

“The clubs have done an incredible amount of work in the close season, with fans, with fundraising and with managing themselves as businesses.”

“We were keen to create a consistent standard over the different streaming arrangements that were in place. “WatchLOI for the Premier Division and LOITV for the First Division and the Women’s National League are important for the period before fans can get back into grounds but also in the longer term as we expand the reach of the League.

“We want to tug at the heartstrings of families and young fans so that they can get involved with their local club as well as the big clubs in England, Scotland or across Europe. You are closer to the action here and your heroes can be living in your own community. Getting to fans at a young age will get them as fans for life.”
