Aidan O’Brien completed a remarkable Breeders’ Cup weekend at Keeneland on Saturday when Benvenuto Cellini captured the $5 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf. This was his third win of the weekend, extending the Ballydoyle trainer’s record as the most successful in the international championship’s history.

Ryan Moore delivered the victory with a perfectly timed challenge, making it O’Brien’s third of the two-day meeting and his 24th Breeders’ Cup success overall.

It followed Friday victories for Sun Goddess in the Juvenile Fillies Turf and Haffner in the Juvenile Turf, which had already taken O’Brien clear of American trainer Bob Baffert in the all-time standings.

Benvenuto Cellini, winner of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh in June, produced a powerful finish to defeat France’s Map Of Stars, with stable companion Diamond Necklace finishing third.

The result gave O’Brien an eighth Breeders’ Cup Turf victory, another competition record, while Moore recorded his sixth success in the race.

It also brought O’Brien’s tally of Group One and Grade One victories for 2026 to 28, equalling the record he established in 2017.

The performance further underscores the strength of the international racing operation built around Coolmore and Ballydoyle.

The weekend’s achievements were particularly impressive given the quality of opposition and the logistical demands of transporting horses across the Atlantic to compete against leading American, European and Japanese operations.

The wider Irish contribution was also evident on Friday, when Joseph O’Brien’s Green Empress and Johnny Murtagh’s Curracloe completed an Irish-trained first three behind Sun Goddess in the Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Sport for Business Perspective

The commercial significance extends well beyond the prize money earned at Keeneland.

International success at this level strengthens the reputation and potential future breeding value of horses associated with Irish bloodstock operations, reinforcing demand for stallion services, sales and training expertise.

The Breeders’ Cup provides a global showcase for an industry in which Ireland holds a particularly strong competitive position.

O’Brien’s latest achievements also demonstrate the cumulative value of sustained investment in bloodstock, facilities, people and international relationships.

With three winners at one of the world’s most valuable racing meetings, Irish racing has again demonstrated its ability to compete and succeed on the international stage.
